A Brief History of UK Bingo
You can visit almost any town or city in the UK and you will almost certainly find at least one bingo hall. Bingo is somewhat of a national past time for us Brits, who have been playing the game religiously for hundreds of years. These days, we are just as likely to be playing Bingo online at UK bingo sites such as ChitChat Bingo. This is a world away from the way bingo games of old were played, yet the game has not changed very much at all.
- The Origins Of UK Bingo
Bingo was originally played by the Italians as early as the 1500’s, where it was a type of lottery. But it did not reach the rest of Europe in the 1700’s. UK bingo was originally known as ‘housey’, which is why some people still yell out ‘house’ when they have a winning card.
- Bingo’s Popularity
UK bingo became very popular very quickly. It was often played at special events such as carnivals and fetes and, over the years, players developed their own ‘language’ for playing bingo, in the form of nicknames for numbers which were called – two fat ladies, for 88 being an example of this.
