Australia has had a long tradition of horse racing. It has been one of the most watched as well as most wagered upon sport in this country. It has grown into quite a big economic activity in itself which provides employment to a large number of people, is instrumental in generating revenue for the government and in developing a culture of good care and upkeep of the animals. Australian horse racing is essentially the thoroughbred racing, although the straightbred and the harness racing is also done albeit at a smaller level. Some of the most important races are the thoroughbred races and the same are the most wagered upon ones as well.
The Australian horse racing industry is quite well organized. There are a number of race courses well spread out across Australia to provide the racing spectacle to a large number of people. All the facilities and the accompanying infrastructure are well maintained. It provides employment to a large number of people, like the caretakers of the horses, stables and the facilities. It also employs veterinarian doctors, jockeys, race horse trainers and many other people. This sport is also a key contributor to the exchequer. The government earns millions of dollars every year in the form of taxes on the wagering activities being done by the people on the different tournaments of this sport held all through the year.
The race horses are very well cared for all through their life, right from their birth. A lot goes into their training, feeding, caring and medication. These are respected for their achievements even after their racing life is over. After the race horse, it is the jockey and the trainer of the horse who are the next key players in the racing industry. The professional wagerers do keep a close watch on the jockeys and the trainers since it is their skills and experience which extracts the best performance from the horses. The trainers train the horses to develop the strength and the stamina to race. The jockeys develop a symbiotic relation with the race horse and guide and direct the horse to work at its full pace.
Due to the long standing tradition of playing this sport as well as the supportive legal framework which allows betting on this and many other sports, betting is prevalent on quite a widespread scale across the country. People place different types of bets, most common and easy ones being the Win, the Place and the Win and Place bets. The more complex ones include the Quinellas, the Trifectas and others.
There are some ethical issues which are being constantly faced by the Australian Horse racing industry. These issues reflect upon the high injury rates of the race horses. These draw the attention of the public towards forcible racing of the race horse under the influence of the drugs, the miserable after-racing life of the horses, inappropriate medical research for them and even the inhumane attitude towards these animals. These issues are the regular pointers to the need of reforms in this well organized industry.
