The Ancient Keno

Around 200 A.D when Cheung Leung, belonging to Han dynasty, launched the game keno. Players were needed to select a character set out of the 120 symbols. These symbols were further subdivided into 8 sub-categories.

The Random combinations were drawn by the emperor twice each day. If the gambler is lost on 1 sub-category, 3 additional bets were lost whereas if gamblers won on a particular sub-category, 10 additional bets were won.

Consequently, keno was also referred as Chinese lottery. The results of the lottery were sent through messenger doves over the vast domain of the emperor. Consequently, the game also started being referred by these white pigeons.

This lottery was called as “idiot taxes” by certain Chinese scholars as Cheung Leung used the generated money for reinstating the army and building Great wall. Nevertheless, Cheung Leung’s name always appears in keno history for being responsible for creating this game.

Although that time keno was illegal, Chinese immigrants thrived especially around big cities like San Francisco. It became known as the Chinese lottery. Americans became interested in the game, but had difficulty differentiating the Chinese characters used in the game. Around the beginning of the 20th century, keno operators replaced the Chinese characters with Arabic numbers to allure more players.

When gambling was legalized in 1931, lotteries were still considered illegal in all of the various casinos around the US. Casinos at that time wanted to keep the game, so they changed it into a so called horse racing game. Instead of plain numbers, numbers of horses were bet on. Some of the features of keno remained throughout keno history, and one of these is the fact it’s called a racing game.

This is also the time when keno was given its name, which was shortened from “horse race keno”. A few years later, the lottery prohibition was removed, and the government started to tax horse betting, thus the game was again changed to Keno.
