Super Bowl XLIV – When it’s Not Just About the Game
Super Bowl XLIV – When it’s Not Just About the Game
Altamonte Springs, FL (PRWEB) February 4, 2010
Frequently the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) sees the effects that the most celebrated day in sports has on callers to its 24-hour helpline before those closest to the caller do. Many sports gamblers view this game as their last chance to make up for losses incurred throughout the year. They will wager everything in hopes to achieve that “big win”. What many compulsive gamblers don’t consider when gearing up for this game and placing their bets, is the fallout that their families can face due to their gambling behaviors.
As Pat Fowler, FCCG Executive Director explains, “Impacts from compulsive gambling are devastating to those closest to the gambler. In fact, often times, family members suffer more than the gambler themselves.” Statistics from the FCCG’s 24-hour helpline indicate:
74% of callers report family conflict due to a gambling problem
65% report family neglect
4% report family violence in the household
1/3 of the households have children under the age of 18
With Super Bowl Sunday less than one week away, and many just waiting to put down their bets, it is important that people know that they have options available and that the FCCG HelpLine is here to help both the gambler and their families. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest gambling events of the year. While many compulsive gamblers feel this is their last opportunity to recoup losses from 2009, the reality is that most don’t, and the impacts felt from this loss are real and often severe.
“The good news is that help is available, and families of problem gamblers can get help for themselves even if the gambler is not ready to do so. The Council’s 24-Hour Helpline, 888-ADMIT-IT, provides gamblers and their loved ones with the help they need, anytime of the day or night.”
